Job Summary The Directional Drill Operator/Locator safely operates the directional drill to place product underground, locate the drill head to understand elevation changes, and make decisions on drilling depths to avoid underground utilities. This position supports the Line team and works with personnel within the department. Responsibilities Operate the drill rig efficiently, preparing the job and drill for safe shot performance. Identify and locate utilities that will be paralleled or crossed during the bore shot. Verify existing utilities. Fill water tanks and combine water with chemicals for boring, according to the ground being drilled. Locate the drill head from point A to point B at the correct depth without hitting any utilities. Hook up swivel, reamer, and pipe product to be pulled back to complete the bore shot. Walk out the bore shot before starting to ensure all utilities are located and to plan passage around obstacles. Pull back the product with the appropriate hole opener and mud mixture to ensure proper completion. Inspect and maintain job equipment, including drill equipment and mixing unit. Qualifications Minimum High school diploma or equivalent. 1 year of relevant experience. Valid CDL Class A driver’s license with tanker endorsement. OSHA 10 Certification. Preferred 3 or more years of experience. Physical Demands and Work Environment This job operates in a field environment. It requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, and twisting. It may involve inclement weather — extreme heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, wind. The position requires lifting up to 50 pounds, clear vision at 20 feet or more, or 20 inches or less, precise hand-eye coordination, and color recognition.
