How Youll Contribute

The Communications Division leads the development and execution of integrated communications strategies to further the mission of the National Geographic Society and advance its position as one of the world's most trusted nonprofit organizations and global brands. Driven by the Society's vision to be more globally known for its impactful Explorer-led programs, the Divisions strategic minds develop communications to promote the Societys Explorers, programs and key priorities. The Division comprises four teams: Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, Internal Communications and Social Media.

The Social Media team amplifies the mission and work of the Society and its community of Explorers across the organizations social media platforms.

The Director, Social Media is responsible for supporting the implementation and execution of a social media strategy that engages the Societys Explorer community and leverages their work, discoveries, assets, impact and contributions across the organizations channels. The Director, Social Media, leads a team that works directly with Explorers to build out an engaging calendar of content appropriate for each platform, and which is distinct from the social media content on the National Geographic-branded social media handles managed through the Societys media partnership with The Walt Disney Company. This position reports to the Chief Communications Officer.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Social Media Strategy 40%

  • Working closely with the Communications leadership and leaders from across the organization who engage with our Explorer community, oversee the implementation and execution of an annual social media strategy that centers on direct contributions from the Societys community of Explorers, including scientists, storytellers, educators and more.
  • Ensure that the strategy is distinct from the National Geographic-branded social media channels operating through the Societys media partnership with The Walt Disney Company, and that the content considered for the Societys platforms is the right fit for its owned platforms vs. broader distribution via the Disney partnership.
  • Build the environment within the Explorer Community and the Society for successful execution of this strategy, including deep engagement with the Explorers working closely with the Societys Explorer Engagement and programmatic teams and the operational teams at the Society, including Legal and Business Affairs for the necessary agreements, clearances and rights.
  • Incorporate social media best practices and serve as the organizations social media subject matter expert.

Content, Marketing and Philanthropic Collaboration (25%)

  • Identify existing assets and direct the development of new content to support the amplification of Explorers on the Societys social media channels.
  • Collaborate closely with the marketing functions at the Society to ensure seamless paid social campaigns leveraging the organizations social platforms.
  • Develop creative and engaging strategies for recognizing and celebrating the organizations philanthropic partnerships as part of the overarching social strategy focused on Explorer contributions.

Team Leadership (25%)

  • Lead the team executing the Societys social media strategy.
  • Set clear responsibilities and expectations.
  • Develop and manage the social media budget. Ensure that direct reports are producing according to the Societys processes, policies and standards.
  • Foster innovation and team development. Invest time in mentoring staff to ensure their professional growth.
  • Align efforts to existing resources.
  • Establish high-level KPIs to assess impact and adjust tactics as needed.
  • Develop and recommend strategies and policies for consideration by senior management.

Social Listening (10%)

  • Leverage the Societys enterprise tools for robust social listening monitoring and reporting regularly on content and conversations about the Society, its community of Explorers, the broader National Geographic brand and other relevant topics.

Bachelors degree preferred

Minimum Years And Type Of Experience

10+ years of social media experience and 3+ years of management

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Deep understanding of social media platforms and strategies.
  • Strong ability to direct the social media workflow from strategy through final production.
  • Proven success in leading social media teams.
  • Ability to prioritize workflows with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage a high-functioning team and work on multiple projects, under deadlines, with changing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of modern social media business, including industry trends and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated experience in leveraging multimedia to increase social media engagement.

  • Experience executing social media strategies for a complex nonprofit organization.
  • Experience identifying compelling stories, content and assets sourced from a community of contributors.
  • Proven management and mentor abilities that encourage professional growth in direct reports and a collaborative team environment.
  • Active social media user with a deep understanding of major platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and Facebook.
  • Deep experience with social media tools, including monitoring and analytics platforms, as well as project management, calendaring and planning tools.
  • Humility, creativity and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to work cohesively and collaboratively across teams.
  • A demonstrated interest in science, storytelling, education and conservation of the earth's cultural and natural resources.

Salary Information

The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The salary range for this position is $137,700.00 - $145,000.00.

Job Designation

Hybrid - At the Society, we believe in the advantages of coming together to build community, mentor and learn from colleagues, and connect more deeply with our mission. As a result, the majority of our staff are Hybrid. Our Hybrid category requires that staff work at Base Camp two days each week: every Tuesday and Wednesday. Hybrid staff are also always welcome to come in additional days each week if preferred.
