Position Overview

The Registered Nurse (RN) in Pre-Admit Testing and Telephone Interviews (PAT) provides both direct and indirect patient care, focusing on pre-operative assessments and ensuring patients are adequately prepared for surgery. This role involves performing detailed health reviews, including medical histories, current medications, and previous surgical information, while providing education and addressing patient concerns. The RN's decisions and actions with patients and families are made ethically, practicing compassion and respect for the inherent dignity and unique attributes of each person. The RN ensures effective communication, prioritizes patient safety, and maintains high standards of care.

Compensation is commensurate upon education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Hiring compensation range starts from $34.00/hour.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform pre-surgical assessments and telephone interviews, reviewing medical histories, medications, and relevant health information.
  • Provide pre-operative education to patients, addressing any concerns related to surgery and recovery.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation and testing are complete before the scheduled surgery.
  • Collaborate with physicians, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare providers to create personalized care plans.
  • Maintain clear communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team to ensure seamless care and coordination.
  • Demonstrate compassion and respect for each patient's dignity and individuality.
  • Follow department protocols, ethical standards, and best practices to maintain high-quality patient care and safety.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment by maintaining effective and professional relationships with colleagues, physicians, and leadership.
Position Requirements

Minimum Education:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Experience:
  • Previous experience as a registered nurse is preferred but not required.
  • Prior healthcare experience in an acute or clinic setting is beneficial.
  • One year of experience in a similar role with a similar scope is preferred.
Required Registration/License/Certification:
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of North Carolina.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required at the time of hire.
  • Additional certifications, such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), must be obtained within one year.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of and ability to work within the scope of nursing practice as outlined by licensure and hospital policies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with patients, families, staff, and physicians.
  • Competency in delivering safe and effective patient care in line with hospital policies.
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, families, staff, and physicians.
  • Familiarity with data entry and the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to lift, position, and transfer patients up to and greater than 50 pounds.
  • Requires manual dexterity and mobility, including bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, or walking may be required.
  • Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
Working Conditions:
  • Regular exposure to the risk of blood-borne diseases.
  • Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical equipment, chemicals, and bodily fluids.
  • Subject to irregular hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations.
  • Continuous standing and walking for periods greater than 8 hours per shift.
  • May be required to sit for extended periods greater than 4 hours.
